I still think it is utterly ridiculous. Why not just set the clocks to noon on the half day of the equinox at 45 degrees North/South and have done with it? Ours is not to reason why!
Besides, I was seeing dawn on a routine basis anyway and finally not getting up in the dark. Now I’ll agree, it is nice to be up and watch the sun hit the western hills between a gap in the clouds. A brief flash of gold and purple. Definitely pleasant to see. But still!
A brief review of time. The earth makes 360 degrees in 24 hours or 15 degrees of longitude per hour. We are at ~72 deg west longitude here or a little less than 5 hours from Greenwich. The time zone (-5) is centered on 75 deg west or 5 hours. that sets standard time “of the clock” or o’clock. To do what you suggest would put the entire country on the same clock time since time does not vary by latitude. Daylight savings time is still silly. Come look at my sundial sometime. It is tipped from the true north-south line and vertical so is different than most.
You are quite correct, but still, we could at least stop this nonsense!
It is funny, that Australians, New Zealanders, many European countries, as well as the US have a version of “summer time”, but no one really seems to knows where it comes from. It is defended for a variety of silly reasons but very few really like it. Humans can be quite silly sometimes.
